I pick you up from your Sanur hotel in the early morning to beat the midday heat and traffic heading up into Gianyar regency. As we drive north through Batubulan and Celuk, I share the daily rhythm of Balinese compound life and explain the communal banjar system that organizes every village we pass.
Our first stop is the terraced valley of Tegallalang. We step onto the walking tracks before the bus crowds arrive, walking down along the carved ridges. Here, I point out the ancient subak irrigation network, showing you how water flows naturally from mountain springs through shared stone channels to feed each terrace evenly. We stop to chat with local farmers tending their paddies and take time to rest under the shade of coconut palms.
Next, we head into central Ubud to visit the open courtyards of Puri Saren Agung, the royal palace, and walk past the lotus ponds of Pura Taman Saraswati. You will see authentic Balinese stonework and multi-tiered shrines, while I explain the spiritual geometry behind traditional compound architecture and daily canang sari offerings.
We finish the morning with a quick cold drink at a quiet local warung before driving back down to the coast. You will be back at your Sanur accommodation in time for lunch, with the rest of your afternoon free to spend by the beach.
